Action: Ask Your Members of Congress to Support the Safe Step Act!

Step therapy is a tool used by insurers that requires patients to try a lower-cost prescription drug to treat their condition before “stepping up” to a more expensive option, even if the latter is recommended by the patient’s healthcare provider. In some cases, this leads to poorer health outcomes, more side effects, and ultimately higher costs.

The Safe Step Act, reintroduced this year in the House and Senate, would set restrictions on how insurers can use step therapy. This legislation would require group health insurance plans to establish an exception process for their step therapy protocol, and to respond to exception requests in a timely manner.

LUNGevity strongly supports this legislation as an important protection for patients, and we encourage you to write your members of Congress today and ask them to support the Safe Step Act.
